Best Weekend Walks in West Lothian

There’s something genuinely satisfying about heading out for a good walk and knowing there’s a proper coffee - or delicious lunch - waiting for you at the end of it. Armadale is perfectly placed for exploring some of West Lothian's best walks, with Falkirk just along the road. From peaceful woodland trails and canal paths to country park loops and iconic landmarks, there’s plenty to choose from.

Even better, you can start your morning with breakfast or round off your walk with brunch at The Garden Kitchen.

We’re a dog-friendly café near Armadale, Bathgate and Falkirk, so muddy boots and muddy paws are always welcome. Whether you’re walking solo, meeting friends, or heading out with the family, there’s space to settle in and relax afterwards.

Here are five walks that pair perfectly with a brunch stop around Armadale:

1. River Avon Heritage Trail

Distance: Walk as little or as far as you like
Terrain: Woodland paths and riverside trails

The River Avon Heritage Trail passes through nearby Linlithgow, linking it with Avonbridge and the Avon Aqueduct, making it one of the most rewarding options to combine with a café visit. This is a peaceful walk along the river, with gentle gradients and ample natural shade.

It’s ideal for a relaxed morning wander. You can keep things short and local or extend your route further along the trail if you’re feeling energetic. Dogs love the mix of woodland and riverside scents, and it’s a lovely way to get some fresh air without travelling far.

2. Beecraigs Country Park

Distance: Multiple routes available
Terrain: Forest trails, lochside paths, gentle hills

A short drive from Armadale, Beecraigs Country Park is one of the most popular walking spots in the area — and for good reason. There are well-marked woodland trails, a scenic loch circuit and a mix of shorter and longer routes depending on how much time you have.

It’s especially good if you’re looking for a slightly longer weekend walk. The lochside loop is manageable at an easy pace, and there’s plenty of open space for dogs to enjoy. Afterwards, heading back to Armadale for brunch feels like the perfect finish.

3. Union Canal Towpath

Distance: Completely flexible
Terrain: Flat, accessible path

If you’re in the mood for something gentle and easy-going, the Union Canal towpath is hard to beat. The path is flat and well-maintained, making it ideal for a steady stroll, prams, or older dogs who prefer a smoother surface.

You can walk for ten minutes or an hour - it’s entirely up to you. Start from near Linlithgow or Falkirk. Either start point offers calm canal views and makes it a peaceful choice, particularly on bright mornings. It’s the kind of walk that clears your head without tiring you out.

4. The Helix & The Kelpies

Distance: Flexible lochside and parkland routes
Terrain: Flat, well-maintained paths

If you’re closer to Falkirk or fancy something iconic, a walk around The Helix is a great option. The park offers wide, flat paths around the lagoon and open green space, making it ideal for families and dog walkers.

Of course, the highlight is seeing The Kelpies up close. You can keep your walk short and simple or extend it along connecting paths towards the canal. Afterwards, Armadale is only a short drive away - and brunch tastes even better after a good stretch of the legs.

5. Linlithgow Loch Walk

Distance: Approx. 4.5 miles (full circuit)
Terrain: Well-maintained lochside path

For something a little longer, the circular walk around Linlithgow Loch is a firm local favourite. The path is wide and well-kept, with open views across the water and plenty of space to move at your own pace.

It’s an achievable distance for most walkers, especially if you take it steadily and enjoy the views along the way. After a full loch circuit, a warm drink and something homemade back in Armadale feels very well earned.
